Materials Selection 03 – Types of Wood Finishes

Introduction

The reasons for applying wood finishes are:

1)   It is water-repellent and that control the moisture content in the wood to reduce deformation, warp or crack.

2)   It contains pigment that protects the timber from Ultra Violet radiation (sun light).

3)   It enhances the look and colour of wood.

Eco Conscious

Take an eco-moment to consider the Environmental Friendliness of the wood finishes material you use. Solvent-based wood finishes such as nitrocellulose lacquer and varnishes provide a durable and high quality finish. But, they contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs). Solvents released to the air include Xylene, Toluene, Ketones, Methanol, Methylene Chloride and various mineral spirits.

An alternative application technique to minimize the harmful environmental effects of solvent-based wood finishes is to use non solvent-based or low solvent content. They are made from plant oils and waxes, insect secretions, earth and mineral pigments and other natural materials.

What is the Best Deck Wood Finishes?
Categories Types Properties
Non Water Based Decking Oil Linseed oil, Tung oil,

Olive oil,

Walnut oil,

Mineral oil,

Soybean oil,

Safflower oil.

– Easy to apply and requires the least preparation.

– Water-repellent.

– Darken the colour of timber.

– Protect from UV-light.

– Wear out quicker and often need re-coating after 6 to 12 months.

Water Based Decking Oil Lacquers, Varnishes,

Urethanes,

Polyurethanes,

– Blocks the wood pores and covers the surface with an acrylic film.

– Translucent finish that keep the natural colour.

– Less protection from UV-light.

– Requires sanding and cleaning before application.

– Should outlast at least 12 months.

Exterior Wood Stain Shellac. – Semi translucent finish that enrich the natural colour of the wood.

– They are easy to apply and usually last longer than decking oils.

– They penetrate deep in the timber.

– The high content of colour pigments is excellent for UV-light protection.

– Last at least one and two years.

High Performing Coatings, Adhesives and Paints Polymers, Additives,  – Seal the wood pores, but will not penetrate into the timber like oils and stains.

– Isolate the timber from any moisture and produce a shiny surface.

– Cover the natural wood texture completely.

– Excellent protection from Ultra Violet radiation.

– More sensitive to surface abrasion.

– Service-life can be two to three years, sometimes longer.

Environmental-Friendly Paint Milk Paint. – An antique-looking colored finish that is biodegradable, non-toxic and odor-free when dry.

Earth Friendly finish that is made from milk casein, clay fillers, lime and earth pigments for color.

– The flat, grainy look of a milk paint finish is quite distinctive.

– It dries quickly and can be applied directly to sanded wood without the need for a primer or sealer and forms a hard matte surface when dry.

– It bonds well with raw wood from naturally forming resin called Calcium Caseinate.

– The lime in milk paint acts as an insecticide and fungicide, protecting wood from insect and fungal infestations.

– Last at least one and two years.
